How can light convey a tactile sensation?

The IESNYC 2014 Student Lighting Competition – A Light Touch – asked students if they could ‘touch with their eyes’ and challenged them to consider how light conveys the sensation of touch.
I kicked off the process by creating various rough lighting studies, in hopes of finding something that captured the theme of the competition. "Flux” was discovered through this experimentation, made up of a paper quilled light box that not only diffuses light, but also creates depth and volume, giving form to light.
The amorphous pockets created by paper quilling captures light and channels it into a constant state of flux.
Flux received an Honorable Mention at the 2014 IESNYC Student Lighting Competition, and was exhibited at the 2016 Pratt Show.
